About

Sodhi

I'm Hardeep Deerhe, known as Sodhi: a tabla player, singer and producer based in Glasgow.

I started young. My tabla hand was first set by Professor Bhagat Singh of Phagwara, whose teaching comes down from Professor Darshan Singh Komal, a student of Bhai Sain Ditta of Amritsar. My main training was with Pandit Vijay Kangutkar in Glasgow, a disciple of the great Pandit Taranath Rao. I've also learned from Pandit Yogesh Samsi, Pandit Sadanand Naimpalli and Ustad Tari Khan, and studied jori and pakhawaj with Ustad Gian Singh Namdhari.

Most of my work now sits where that tradition meets Scottish folk, jazz and new music. I've toured across Scotland, the UK, Europe, India and North America, worked with the German bands Homebound and Reveal, and I play with Naad-Hara and Bletherin.

I've played at the Golden Temple in Amritsar five times, including a live TV broadcast to 168 countries. I'm also the tabla player in Kanpur: 1857, which won the Charlie Hartill Award and then a Fringe First at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe.

In 2015 we were the opening act at the Sawai Gandharva festival in Pune, one of India's most important classical music festivals. I was the first Scottish-born musician to play there. At home, I co-produce Glasgow Mela, and I teach at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
